Background
In 1986 the French River was identified as a Canadian Heritage river. It has played an important part in our country’s history and continues to provide recreational and fishing opportunities to residents and to an active tourism industry. The improved access to the waterfront has seen an increase in the numbers of both seasonal and year round homes. As access highways become 4 lanes this trend can be expected to continue. As more and more developments dot the shoreline the need to protect the river’s ecosystem is heightened.
Those of us who own waterfront property and who benefit from the recreational activities should bring the issue of water quality stewardship to the forefront. To this end the French River Stewardship Council was formed.
