Micro Hatchery Update – May, 2024

French River Stewardship Council Fish Micro Hatchery News Letter

In August 2018, The French River Stewardship Council (FRSC) commenced the development of a Community School Micro Fish Hatchery project in partnership with l’École secondaire de la Rivière-des-Français in Noëlville, in an effort to provide an educational opportunity for the students and to sustain the walleye and trout fishery in local waters.

Several batches of both trout and pickerel fry have been successfully released to date with only a couple of failures due to external conditions (ex. power failures).  During co-vid, limited fry releases occurred.  The hatchery started back up and received eggs in 2023.

A batch of trout eggs were received by the hatchery and the fry were released locally in early February 2024.

In mid May, 2024, a batch of pickerel eggs were installed in the Micro Hatchery.

FRSC would also like to thank Jérémie Guertin, math and physical education teacher at École secondaire de la Rivière-des-Français as well as several students for their active participation and strong ongoing support of the Micro Hatchery.
